You can't always control where you live — but you can learn to read a space, ask better questions, and make small changes that add up. Start here.
Start with the checklistNone of these need a meter or an expert — just your senses and a few minutes on the tour.
Does it smell fresh, or stale and shut-in? Look for openable windows and check whether there's any ventilation or filtration.
Which way do the windows face? Morning light wakes you gently; a dark unit you'll light artificially all day.
Stand still for thirty seconds. Traffic, neighbours, hallway echo — quiet is hard to add later, so notice it now.
Run the tap. Clear and odourless? Good pressure? A cheap filter handles the rest once you're in.
Fresh paint or new flooring? Ask how long ago — and whether you can air it out before move-in.
Is there room for one calm corner — somewhere to stretch, read, or do nothing? That corner matters more than square footage.
If you own or manage, the same ideas can lift retention and make your building easier to love. See what's worth doing.
